We’re looking for the best creative careerists to pitch on our stage in Newburgh in February 2018 for a chance to win $1,000+ in cash plus a commissioned project. All winners, will be offered free access to the CreativesMX Marathon, our flagship event held July 30th – August 5th, 2018.

Mingle over meals with creatives, entrepreneurs, investors, founders, developers professionals and many others from the tri-state area.

Attend workshops and talks on innovation, design, entrepreneurship plus engage with vendors and local businesses.


The Mavericks Invitational is a 36-Hour immersive development and entrepreneurship hackcamp for creative careerists. Mavericks will leave the Invitational with Cash, Commissioned Work and Prizes plus skills in innovation, production, entrepreneurship, product development.

The Invitational starts at 6pm on Friday, February 16th. Participants are welcome to work in our shared workspace Friday evening thru the weekend to Sunday morning. The invitational officially ends at 5pm on Sunday, February 18th.

The final event on Sunday afternoon, February 18th is our Pitch Session, an opportunity to network with producers, startup founders, industry professionals, and many others from across the tri-state. Maverick teams will pitch their breakthrough innovations to a panel of established entrepreneurs and industry leaders for seed cash and the medium to bring their idea to reality.

Our Selection Process

After registration, the CreativesMX team reviews all of the registrants. At this stage, we are determining basic viability and whether our competition categories will be accommodated. Evaluating the artistic talent and career background of the registrant is also part of the process.

Projects must fit into one of # categories (performing, media, literary, visual, design, culinary, makers, tech & gaming) to compete. Three projects in each category will be selected to join us on stage for the Pitch Session. Special Partner categories (creative economy subjects) have smaller ranking levels.

Spectators and mentors determine the first cut during the Saturday exercises by evaluating each of the teams and solo proposals and score them on creativity, feasibility and engagement on a 1-to-10 scale.

On Sunday morning, CreativesMX will then take a deeper look at each of the remaining applications and score them on seven to nine categories on a 1-to-5 scale. We take that ranking from top to bottom and identify the competitors [and alternates] that we want to meet face-to-face. Once identified, we bring the top 3 ranking teams and participants to give us their pitch and to undergo a Q&A session. The pitch time limit is 5 minutes followed with 5 minutes of Q&A.

Based on our impression of your pitch and other factors, we will then announce those who we want to have to complete the commissioned projects at the CreativesMX Marathon and partner events later in 2018.

Note: The Invitational is for the CreativesMX 2018 season. Only apply if you will be able to attend the CreativesMX Marathon.

Who Is Invited?

Any creative careerist is eligible to participate. The following creative industries are available:

  • Literature & Publishing: Writers, poets, editors, illustrators and publishers.
  • Makers: Makers, innovators, craftsmakers, inventors, 3D printer makers.
  • Visual Arts: Painters, illustrators, drawers, sculptors, ceramic and new media artists. 
  • Music:  Songwriters, musicians, singers, producers and folk backstage
  • Architecture: Architects in construction, green industries, landscaping, civil engineers & planners.
  • Design: Graphic designers, interior designers, textile designers, industrial designers.
  • Dance: Dancers, choreographers, designers, composers and presenters

How do I Know That I'm a Maverick?

Well, if you have to ask, then…Are you spending more time having a career as a creative than working a day job? Put bluntly, is being a creative your day job? Are you one commissioned project away from taking the leap to only working in your creative field? Then, you’re a Maverick to us.

Once I Register, What Do I Need To Bring?

CreativesMX will provide pens, notepads, whiteboards, markers and plenty of workspace.

You’ll need: A laptop and charger. Everything else is optional but remember, you will need to bring your project to life. Also, we strongly encourage you to bring a sleeping bag, pillows, toiletries, and a couple of changes of clothes.

You won’t need: An idea, or a team. You can create your own team (teams of 4 recommended) during the Invitational, and generate some amazing creations along the way. You also don’t need to worry about food, all meals are provided with your registration.

Will I Have A Hotel Room?

Hotel accommodations are not provided in your Mavericks Invitational registration fee. And frankly, we don’t expect that you will do much sleeping. However, if you would like to book a private hotel room, we are happy to provide a discount to all registered attendees. After you register, the hotel discount code will be provided to you via email.

When/Where Can I Create?

The Mavericks Invitational will start with the kick-off ceremony. There will be events planned throughout the day for those who arrive early. A detailed schedule of events and locations will be posted later. All work eligible for prizes must be completed between Friday night after the kick-off and Sunday morning. We will not accept any projects that were started prior to the Invitational (e.g. continuations of personal projects).

How Much Will Mavericks Invitational Cost Me?

The registration fee is $99 per person ($89 for groups of 3 or more). We'll provide you with a weekend's worth of meals, drinks, and snacks and a place to crash when you need a break from coding. In fact, you’ll probably walk away loaded with swag.

What Can I Win?

It’s not about winning-it’s about exploring your passion while building the creative community (which if you ask us, is what it’s all about!!!). But if you’re a fan of winning, we’ve got some great prizes in stock. A panel of professional judges. Each category has over $1000 in cash prizes plus each winning project receives a funding commission. Professional judges will select the best project based on the following criteria: creativity, functionality, level of technical difficulty and quality. Most sponsors offer their own prizes as well for specific categories which are evaluated themselves.

I'm Not A Creative, So How Can I Get Involved?

If you're looking to mentor (i.e. someone with technical skills who'd be willing to give a workshop or help out participants during the weekend), you should reach out to us at Otherwise, you can be a Spectator. Spectators get to attend workshops and the Expo Hall plus see the finished products at the Pitch session on Sunday. Thank you for your interest, and we hope to be able to incorporate you in the future.

Can I Participate In The Mavericks Invitational If I Live Outside Of The Mid-Hudson Valley?

Yes! We accept participants from anywhere in the world! But note that attending the CreativesMX Marathon in the Mid-Hudson Valley on July 30th thru August 5th is a requirement if chosen as a finalist.

Are Travel Costs to the Maverick Invitational Event Covered By CreateivesMX?

Unfortunately, we are not able to help cover travel costs or other expenses related to attending the Mavericks Invitational event.

Who Will Attend The Mavericks Invitational Event?

Aside from our staff and the participants, the Mavericks Invitational will be attended by many sponsors, creators, developers, and other entrepreneurs, looking for support and networking opportunities. Even if your project doesn't win the grand prize, there are still plenty of opportunities to receive support for your idea at the Mavericks Invitational event!

Are Mavericks Guaranteed Their Project Is Implemented By CreativesMX?

No. Although we will hand over all work product resulting from our Mavericks Invitational weekend on the winner’s project and proposal, we cannot guarantee we will subsequently reach an amicable two party “deal” within which we will contractually build your final project or proposal. Many factors including time, finances, equity offered, business plan analysis, go-to-market plan strength, and others, can affect our desire and ability to enter into a deal subsequent to the Mavericks Invitational.
